Single-stock autocallables, explained through this fortnight's notes
Explainer A single-stock autocallable ties its coupon and its repayment to one company's shares: this fortnight an autocallable linked to Coinbase shares carried a contingent coupon of 32% a year, paid only if the shares close at or above 70% of their starting level on an observation date. Coupons that high usually come with more risk to principal. 23% Share of this fortnight's notes linked to a single stock, out of 1,741 notes priced across all currencies. |
1 | How the coupon is paidOn single-stock autocallables with a contingent coupon, the coupon is paid only if the shares close at or above the coupon trigger on an observation date, and a coupon missed on one date is lost unless the note has a memory feature. Those with an automatic call can also end early: such a note is called automatically if the shares are at or above its call level on an observation date. |
2 | What puts principal at riskOn single-stock autocallables with a barrier, the barrier decides repayment, and it is a separate level from the coupon trigger even when the two match. For a maturity-only barrier, principal is repaid in full unless the shares end below the barrier; below it the investor loses the whole fall from the starting level, not only the part below the barrier. When the barrier is checked at any daily close during the term, a close below it on any day can put principal at risk, not only a close below it at maturity. Each filing says when the barrier is watched: at maturity only, or at any daily close during the term. Excluding late filings, the typical barrier among the 288 single-stock autocallables with a contingent coupon, an automatic call and a barrier priced this fortnight was 60% of the starting level. |
3 | Where barriers clustered this fortnightBarrier levels on these single-stock autocallables are not spread evenly. Most notes sit in two bands, one of them at the typical barrier given above, with far fewer in the band between them, and only a few at the lowest or highest levels. |
See the data in the registry → 4 | An autocallable linked to Coinbase shares with a coupon near the top of comparable notesThe note was priced on October 15, 2026. Its coupon is paid each quarter only if the shares close at or above 70% of their starting level on an observation date, with no memory for missed coupons. It is called automatically if the shares are at or above their starting level on an observation date, checked each quarter from December 31, 2026; it can end early, so its term is up to three years. Principal is repaid in full unless the shares are below 70% of their starting level at maturity; below that level the investor loses the whole fall from the starting level. Barclays issued it. The comparison group is 669 single-stock contingent-coupon autocallables with an automatic call, a term of two to three years and a barrier near 70%, priced from October 22, 2025 to October 22, 2026, this one included. Its coupon of 32% a year is higher than 99 in 100 of them. The typical comparable note's coupon is 16.9% a year. Among 33 single-stock notes linked to Coinbase shares with the same payoff and the same kind of barrier, of any term or barrier level and this one included, the typical coupon was 25% a year, and one note built exactly the same way on the same shares carried a higher coupon. |
